BRAND NEW DVD REVIEW: An Evening With Richard Bandler, Introduction to NLP

Matthew Wingett reviews NLP LIFE TRAINING's latest DVD release: An Evening with Richard Bandler, Introduction to NLP, and discovers there's a lot more to it than at first meets the eye.

There are many courses and books purporting to tell you all about how to do NLP, that don't use NLP to do it. Those courses and introductions are sometimes dry, can often miss the point of what NLP is about - and too frequently prove to be highly ineffective.  On the other hand, Richard Bandler is neither dry nor ineffective when he talks about NLP.  His approach to teaching his skills is all about incorporating NLP techniques in his presentations - and this DVD - recorded live in front of an audience of 350 in October 2009 - is no exception.

For those who have benefited from the training techniques of Richard Bandler, this DVD will come as a refreshing top-up to remind you of the powerful effect of the longer courses.

And for those who haven't yet trained with Richard, this Introduction to NLP straight from the horse's mouth gives not only an entertaining and interesting overview of what NLP is about, but also an example of the sorts of techniques that Richard has developed and now teaches to others.

As well as outlining with characteristic humour how he began the development of NLP through a series of chance encounters and close observation of geniuses in the therapeutic and psychological community, Richard also recounts how his observations came to underpin the NLP approach to life, and how NLP is now used in numerous settings far removed from its original context.  In education, in sports, in business - the techniques of "NLP modelling" give tens of thousands of people around the world the chance to learn from the very best how to be the best.

Also in this DVD is a masterclass in dealing with clients when using NLP as a therapy. Richard selects two clients from the audience, and in a buzzing and laughter-filled pair of interventions shows one man how to get rid of bad memories and negative thoughts, while he shows a woman from the audience how to face her fear of public speaking.

If you have studied NLP and want to learn how to do NLP by seeing a master in action, then this DVD is a gem that rewards with rewatching.  I have sat down and viewed Richard's interventions on this DVD on several occasions, and each time have spotted a nuance and subtlety that is not immediately apparent due to the slickness of his work.  Keeping track of his language patterns, his embedded commands, his analogue marking and his hypnotic techniques is fascinating and extremely useful.  It is also informative to realise that much of the groundwork for the change he weaves in his two "clients" is laid prior to them even coming on the stage. By setting a direction with metaphor, and an expectation of change, Richard brings about the change they want easily in both "clients".

For those with no understanding of the basics of NLP, this DVD is a highly informative piece of work that will whet the appetite and give an insight into the speed with which NLP as a therapy can be applied, as well as the other changes it can bring about.

And if you are already qualified in NLP, you will learn plenty from Richard's stagework, his mastery of metaphors and - probably most importantly of all - his attitude to life.

Running to 1 hour and 53 minutes, this is a great DVD, and great value at only £18 plus p&p plus VAT.
