I always enjoy learning from people who are not only the best at what they do, but also great at teaching it in an experiential manner. Learning by doing makes it all sink in a lot easier, and I leave such trainings being able to easily do more than when I arrived.
Having grown up with a speech impediment, I was certainly not comfortable talking in front of people. By the time I fixed my speech problems in my mid teens, I was in a habit of keeping my voice to myself. Through my consulting and NLP careers, this naturally improved and I became comfortable speaking one on one with people and in front of groups. And now the things I enjoy the most in my work are putting on training events, presenting through youtube videos, and working with people in groups.
No matter what level we are at, learning from people at the top of a certain field can lead to great improvement. So when I saw that both Michelle Paradise and Laura Spicer were getting together to present a course on Powerful Public Speaking, this ticked all the boxes for me and I had to go along.
The improvements the participants gained from the Powerful Public Speaking course were largely due to it being true experiential learning. Rather than "learning about public speaking", the course was about immediately putting learnings into practice so the participants could "do public speaking". And a big part of this experiential learning involved getting up there and speaking in front of people, and getting quality feedback. As well as getting invaluable feedback from two of the best in the industry, we also learned the value of feedback from the other participants in the course. Feedback of this type really helped us refine our skills, as the feedback varied person to person just as it would be talking in front of a "real" audience.
It was really nice seeing everyone improve so much throughout the training, and it has been great watching videos of my public speaking since the course and seeing my own improvements.
